Quesnel Hockey Academy

The Quesnel Hockey Academy works in partnership with the Quesnel School District and the local Quesnel and District Minor Hockey Association. The Quesnel Hockey Academy supports and delivers the instruction of the Hockey Canada Skills program at Quesnel Secondary School. Teachers on the staff of Quesnel Secondary School are members of the Quesnel Hockey Academy, trained and cerified at or above the requirements as established by Hockey Canada for the Skills Program. A facility shared use agreement between the City of Quesnel and the Quesnel School District enables inexpensive use of ice at the local arena during daytime hours. The Hockey Canada Skills Academy is an officially licensed program of Hockey Canada. The Quesnel Hockey Academy has the rights to use this licensed program which is in its second year in Quesnel School District. The program is available to any grade 8 to 12 student at Quesnel Secondary School. Students take the Hockey Skills Program in place of their regular Physical Education courses. Usually there are 2 or 3 ice sessions per week and the other time is used for strength training, health, first aid, fitness development, and other sport games.

An additional program is available to students at QSS who are in grades 11 and 12. Qualifying students may receive credits for Independant Directed Studies 11 as well as Career Preparation 12. The students in these programs learn about off-ice aspects of the hockey industry, teaching hockey skills, and being leaders for younger athletes.

The long term vision of the Quesnel Hockey Academy includes:

1. The expansion of the Skills Academy at QSS by including grade 7 students;

2. Development of a foriegn student residential hockey skills program; and

3. Development of a comprehensive all season skating acceleration training program through the use of a "skatemill" as well as various footwork, strength, and agility training.
